How to Put Photos on Wood

Well, it feels like forever that I've posted anything on my blog...I can't believe summer is coming to an end. I am just finishing up my latest project, Photos on wood. I had no idea that it would come out in color but to my surprise it did! I found this idea on pinterest but finally decided to do some. Check out the Craft Inspirations and DIY! Make sure you use regular paper (not photo paper) and use a laser printer (not an inkjet printer,) it's a common question I'm getting.

    2. I have a question. I went to 3 different craft stores and couldn't find ANY gel medium. No one had even heard of it! I got Tacky Glue instead, hoping that would work the same? I figured gel medium was kind of like a glue.. I don't know what it is, honestly, so I didn't know what I was looking for. Please let me know!

    3. Check out the picture above in the materials section. You'll find it in the oil paints and canvas section in the craft store. It is not a glue. Tacky Glue will not transfer the image.

    1. It's actually on my Crafts and Inspiration tab, the grey tabs. Just click on it at the top of this website. I have step by step instructions on how I made them. They are so easy.

    4. Do not use photo paper. Use regular copier paper. The cheaper the easier it'll be to rub off. I hope they come out beautiful!

    1. I used the Liquitex Gel Medium. It says it has a gloss finish but since I put Mod Podge over it, I see that gloss for sure.

  5. Is it ok to use the matte gel? I know stupid question but I'm just assuming the only difference is the picture will come out matte instead of glossy?! Also is it ok to use the matte modge

    1. Yes, you can use matte on these on both. I actually wish I had matte modge podge...I like that look! I hope they come out great!

    2. When you say both, do you mean on the first step?transferring the picture to the wood.

  6. Can I ask why you wish you had used the matte Mod Podge?

    1. Yeah, the gloss finish looks great...I just figured the matte would probably look a bit more rustic. The gloss does give it a good finish though.

    2. Gotcha... I was asking cause when picking up some more M.P. I had that exact thought and wasn't sure which to buy, but I went with glossy.

      Thanks!

  7. All your crafts are so adorable and I love the step by step instructions. I just have one question. What do you mean when tell us to "mirror" the images on the computer before printing? I'm sorry I don't follow that part of your instructions.

    1. Most people might want to mirror the image since you are not actually printing on the wood but on the paper. It's kind of like stamping, the image/text is always backwards on the rubber stamp but when you actually stamp, it comes out correct.

    1. Regular paper...don't use photo paper. And don't print on an inkjet printer.

  9. Can you use mod podge instead of the gel medium?

  10. where did you get the pictures printed using a laser printer?

    1. A laser printer is like a copy machine. I just went to Staples and asked for it to be printed in color rather than black and white. It only cost about 60 cents each sheet but, depending on the size of the metal, you can probably print 2 images on one sheet like I did to make more than one metallic picture.

  11. What happens if you use an inkjet printer? I have a nice printer at home, I just can't tell if it's a laser or inkjet! I bought all the stuff at Hobby Lobby today to try this and I'm so anxious to start!!!!

Also, how does one mirror the image on the computer?

    1. It can't be ink from a cartridge. It must be toner ink for the transfer to work properly. I used Photoshop Elements to mirror the image but I'm sure there are other software you can use.

    1. I'm think as long as it's not completely submerged in water or if you seal it all over (front, back and sides) with modge podge or a sealer it should hold up well outside.

    2. Also, you read my mind about the stone...I came across the perfect stone to experiment on last week so that's on my to-do list!
